Technical Overview

Below is a brief description of the technical specifications relating to the products that Norcon develop. For further information, please contact us.

Hazardous Area Classification

Zone 0: Zone in which an explosive atmosphere is continuously present, or is present for long periods.
Zone 1: Zone in which a explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation.
Zone 2: Zone in which a explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, and if it occurs, it will exist only for a short time.

BS EN 60079-10:, classification of Hazardous Areas gives zone definition as shown above. Norcon flameproof enclosures can be used in Zone 1 or Zone 2 applications, for gas and vapour.

Gas Groups

Representive Gas Group Analysis of the energy required to ignite various gas/air mixture allows similar gases to be grouped together. Norcon manufactures flameproof enclosures for gas groups IIA, IIB and IIC.
Methane I (mining)
Propane IIA (surface industry)
Ethylene IIB (surface industry)
Hydrogen IIC (surface industry)

Temperature Classification

Tmp Class Max Surface Tmp Apparatus should be selected with a suitable temperature classification, i.e. the maximum surface temperature of the apparatus will not reach the igintion temperature of the hazardous atmosphere. Norcon's apparatus certificates are generally rated T6 (unless otherwise stated) and can therefore be used in all applications. All enclousures are certified to -20 to +40 degrees centigrade. We also hold certification for elevated ambient temperature applications. Please contact us for details.
